The Underground Cooking Society, also called the Dark Cooking Society, is an organized group which aims to control all of China through the cooking field. Even though they already have a strong influence all over the country, they still search for all eight of the Legendary Cooking Utensils in order to gain absolute power. They do anything to win and exterminate those who get in their way. When they see a great chef who may become a threat to their master plan or if a chef beats one of them, they'll continue to send chefs to challenge that person until they lose. Their training is very strict, and cruel, and most trainees do not survive and often kidnap young children and forcibly disconnect them from their family through murder. To initiate a chef whose survived the training, they would sometimes scar that person's face and/or body. Once inducted into the organization, there is no turning back and trying to escape is suicidal. Those who fail a task for the organization meet with a terrible end.
The manga is set during a fictitious 19th century China, where chefs from all over China competed in culinary tests of ability, and being a master chef granted one respect and authority. The story centers on Liu Maoxing, a young chef from Szechuan province who learns cooking from his mother. After saving his mother's restaurant, Mao goes on a journey to become a Super Chef, battling other chefs with other cooking styles along the way, and contending with the conspiracies of the Dark Cooking Society.

When Mao's mother dies, Mao decides that he wants to take over as chef of her restaurant. However, in this time, cooking is considered to be a revered art, and only master chefs are allowed to prepare food. Mao realizes that he must learn even more about cooking before he takes over his mother's place. He quickly decides that he wants to become the number one chef in all of China. In order to accomplish this, Mao begins to travel in order to learn more about food and how to prepare it. Being a chef is a competitive art in Qing Dynasty-era China. As Mao travels, he learns many new skills and makes new friends. However, he is also constantly challenged by rival chefs. These rivals include the dangerous and secretive Underground Cooking Society. This group aims to control China through the art of cooking. Mao must learn as much as he can and defeat his rivals if he wants to earn the title of top chef. In each episode, Mao faces his challenges. As the series progresses, viewers also learn more about Mao and his past. The stories of Mao's new friends are also slowly unraveled and revealed. Mao also learns more about the legendary cooking utensils, which are utensils made from a meteorite. These utensils are thought to have magical properties and can aid a chef in unbelievable ways. As he journeys, Mao and his friends attempt to stop the misuse of these utensils and end evil plots.
